Why fish is different
- It’s delicate — full suction can crush fillets, so pulse control or a gentle setting helps.
- It’s wet — moisture causes failed seals; pre-freezing and moist mode help.
- Fatty fish lose quality fast — FoodSafety.gov suggests just 2–3 months in the freezer for fatty fish such as salmon, versus 6–8 months for lean fish, so a tight, air-free seal makes a real difference.

Frequently asked questions
How long does vacuum-sealed fish last in the freezer?
For best quality at 0°F: about 6–8 months for lean fish (cod, tilapia) and 2–3 months for fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), per FoodSafety.gov. It stays safe longer if kept frozen.
Why open vacuum-sealed fish before thawing?
Low-oxygen conditions can allow C. botulinum to grow as fish warms. Opening the package before thawing in the fridge reduces that risk.
Can I vacuum seal fish without freezing it first?
You can, but pre-freezing firms the flesh so it isn’t crushed and stops juices reaching the seal.
