Every recommendation on this site is built on the same framework. This page explains the criteria we use, where our information comes from, and how we label the basis of each review so you can judge it for yourself.

What “Research Pick” means

Unless an article explicitly says a product was used hands-on, our picks are research-based. That means we have:

  • checked the manufacturer’s specifications, manual and warranty terms;
  • compared retailer listings and flagged conflicting figures (for example, dimensions that differ between sellers);
  • looked for recurring patterns in verified owner feedback — the problems and strengths that come up again and again, not one-off complaints;
  • considered independent reviews where available.

We do not invent test results, scores, star ratings or prices. If a specification cannot be confirmed, our tables say “Not stated” rather than guessing.

Our evaluation criteria

Criterion What we look at
Vacuum and sealing performance Pump type and rating, seal bar width, double-seal options, how consistently owners report airtight seals.
Seal consistency Reports of failed or leaking seals, wrinkle sensitivity, cool-down requirements between seals.
Wet-food handling Moist modes, pulse control, drip trays, and whether the design (external vs chamber) can seal liquids.
Dry-food handling Pulse or gentle modes for crushable foods such as bread and crackers; canister and jar options.
Ease of operation Controls, lid latching, indicator lights, one-handed operation, clarity of the manual.
Noise Owner reports and manufacturer information where available.
Cleaning Removable drip trays, wipe-clean surfaces, gasket access, pump maintenance (oil vs dry pumps).
Durability evidence Build materials, cooling fans or duty cycles, warranty length, patterns of long-term failure reports.
Bag compatibility Maximum bag width, embossed vs smooth bag requirements, third-party bag support.
Accessories Accessory ports, hoses, handheld attachments, roll storage and cutters.
Value Features and warranty relative to the product’s category — we don’t publish prices because they change constantly.

How we label each article

  • Research-based — built from manufacturer documentation, published guidance and owner feedback. Marked with a “Research-based” badge.
  • Hands-on — only used when we have actually used the product, and we will describe how.
  • Food-safety guidance — always based on published sources (USDA, FDA, FoodSafety.gov, the National Center for Home Food Preservation and university extension services), which we cite.

Keeping information current

Models are discontinued and specifications change. We review our buying guides regularly, show the last-updated date on every article and correct errors promptly — see our Editorial Policy. If you spot something out of date, please tell us.
